About the Cottage

Stone walls,
open skies

Gars Cottage is a beautifully appointed 3-bedroom stone farmhouse set on the edge of the Howgill Fells in Cumbria. With sweeping fell views from every window, a generous open kitchen, and a log burner to come home to after a day on the hills, this is countryside escaping done properly.

Whether you're out walking the fells at dawn or curled up with a glass of wine as the light fades across the Howgills — Gars Cottage offers the kind of stillness that's increasingly hard to find. Sleeping up to 6, it's perfect for families, groups of friends, or anyone who simply needs to step away from the noise.

The Calf via Bowderdale
The classic Howgills route, starting right from Newbiggin-on-Lune. Head south-west through the dramatic Bowderdale valley, past Cautley Spout waterfall, and up to The Calf — the highest point in the Howgills at 676m. Return via the Dales High Way along the broad ridge tops.

England's highest above-ground waterfall, tumbling 180m down the hillside into the valley below. A spectacular sight in any weather. Park at the 400-year-old Cross Keys Temperance Inn — a National Trust gem — and enjoy tea and homemade cake before or after your walk.
